Empty promise as donors and recipients vanish

FOUR out of 11 pledged donations, worth over 100 million yuan (US$15 million) failed to materialize last year as donors and recipients disappeared, the office compiling this year's China Charity List said.

China Charity List office has started to collect information of large-sum donations made by companies in 2010. The annual list is expected to be published on April 26, Beijing News reported today.

Vanished donors and recipients pose a big obstacle for the office. Phone calls often went unanswered and some numbers didn't even exist. Wang Jianzhong promised to donate 500 million yuan to support the construction of an ancient city in Datong in northern Shanxi Province last August. But the Datong government was unaware of the contribution, the office said.

Initial findings showed the total value of charity donations in China was close to 70 billion yuan.

The list, prepared by the China Philanthropy Times and China Association of Social Workers, honors the top 10 philanthropists and companies.
