Encyclopedia of crimes
THE first volume of an encyclopedia detailing the Nanjing Massacre was released in the eastern city yesterday.
The encyclopedia, composed of four volumes with over 8,000 entries, chronicles the crimes of Japanese troops in Nanjing over a 40-day period from late 1937 to early 1938.
Historians from some 10 countries, including China, Japan, the United States, Russia and Germany contributed.
Zhu Chengshan, curator of the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, believes that as Saturday’s first national memorial day draws near, publication of the book will promote the truth of what happened and refute right-wing Japanese propaganda.
The Japanese right-wing’s attempts to deny history had forced researchers to pay more attention to international cooperation and exchange, said Qi Houjie, one of the compilers.
Japanese troops began their six-week occupation of Nanjing on December 13, 1937.
More than 300,000 Chinese people — soldiers who had laid down their arms and civilians — were killed and more than 20,000 cases of rape occurred.
