Endangered wild donkey spotted in China

SOME 30 endangered Asian wild asses have been spotted in the Chinese prairies that neighbor Mongolia, local forestry police told Xinhua today.

The discovery of the animals has inspired zoologists in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to take protective measures for the endangered species, which has seen a significant decline since the 1990s due to poaching.

Police saw the animals, including three foals, on a routine patrol along the border area of China and Mongolia on Thursday. The donkeys are all in good shape, according to the forestry police bureau of Xilingol League.

Previously in early December, police also saw three wild asses in the area.

China has intensified its crackdown on the poaching of the rare wild ass.

Asian wild asses are native to China, India and Iran. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed the animal on the Red List of Threatened Species, as their population have declined globally by 52 percent in the last two decades. The current estimated number of mature individuals is 8,358 by 2008, according to IUCN.
