English names sought for delicacies

TOURISM authority in southern China's Guangzhou City is offering awards for English names for the city's famed cuisine.

The idea is to help foreigners who come to the city for next year's Asian Games.

The menu covers the most characteristic 69 dim sums of Guangzhou City, including local savored porridges, sausages, steamed dumplings, and vermicelli rolls, according to yesterday's Southern Metropolis Daily.

Winners will not only have the honor of naming the famous dim sums, they will get up to 600 yuan for their contribution.

Everyone can try their English skills by posting translations of the dim sums on a Website (www.liwantour.com) designed to promote the region's foods.

The host of the US reality show "Yan Can Cook" will judge the names.

Different types of translations are buzzing on local forums.

"Ting Zai Zhou," a local porridge, got dozens of suggested names in one day, the longest one containing 12 words, listing all the ingredients.

Some traditional restaurants are also asking looking for good English names.
