English proficiency on the up, but still lagging
ENGLISH proficiency scores are improving among Chinese adults, but still lag behind many other Asian countries, according to a new survey.
Globally, China’s mainland ranked 34th out of 60 countries and regions in the study by EF Education First, a language training company.
That’s up two spots from last year but still in the low-proficiency tier of the English Proficiency Index report.
This is based on a free online English test taken by 750,000 adults from 60 countries and regions where English is not the native language.
The test includes listening and reading skills.
China’s mainland scored 50.77 points this year, up 1.77 points from last year and up 3.15 points from 2011.
But this is still behind Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea, as well as nations such as Indonesia, Vietnam and India which scored lower than China in 2007.
Sweden came first in the EF survey, with a score of 68.69 points, followed by Norway and the Netherlands.
Malaysia has the highest English proficiency in Asia. Malaysia and Singapore are the only Asian countries in the high English proficiency tier.
