Enslaved killers jailed over brick kiln death

A SLAVE-LABOR gang head has been jailed for life and five enslaved brick kiln workers jailed after they beat a mentally retarded worker to death in central China, a Wuhan-based newspaper reported today.
Prosecutors said three mentally retarded slaves joined their gang head Lin Jinguan, also forced to work, in beating the slave known as "Madman" to death with wood sticks, straps and even electric shocks in July 2008, according to the Changjiang Daily report.
The slave head Ye Huabing buried the corpse in the vegetable field beside the kiln the next day, covering the land with new plants. He was jailed for five and a half years and fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,464).
Police in Huangpi received a tip and arrested Ye and five workers on September 18, discovering the victim's body in the field.
Ye promised shop owners and taxi drivers around the railway station a reward of 100 yuan (US$15) for every slave worker, managing to take more than 20 mentally retarded or underage slave workers under his control.
