Environmental protection won’t weaken
VICE Environment Minister Wu Xiaoqing said yesterday that environmental protection efforts would not be eased despite the economic downturn.
“Setting economic development against environmental protection is not appropriate or correct,” Wu told a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of China’s national political advisory body.
He said the more challenges economic growth faced, the more the government needed to strengthen environmental protection to ensure development is done in an environment-friendly way.
“Some areas are indeed facing an economic downturn, and some enterprises’ profits are dropping, but the determination for environmental protection should not be weakened,” he said.
He said he was pleased to see that the new five-year plan was more comprehensive and strict when assessing environmental protection work.
