Environmentalists call for boycott of park’s firefly event

A park promising visitors a chance to see fireflies is drawing protests from environmentalists who fear the insects will die if too many people crowd into the park in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, Jiangxi Daily reported today.

The park is scheduled to receive visitors this Friday, when about 10,000 fireflies are expected to light up the sky. However, a local environment group is calling on people to boycott the park, saying most of the fireflies will die.

The head of the environmental group told the newspaper the ecological environment would be destroyed if the organizer catches thousands of fireflies.

Fireflies are sensitive to humidity and temperature and normally live only 7 to 15 days, Wang Jiangguo, an insect expert at Jiangxi Agriculture University, was cited as saying.

Wang said he hopes the event raises awareness about protecting the environment.

Xiamen, Guangzhou and Qingdao have held firefly exhibitions in recent years, but some were canceled due to environmental activists’ protests.

A park official told the newspaper they had no intention of canceling the event because the insects were from a breeding base.
