Escalator at Shenzhen subway changes direction, injuring 4
AN escalator at a Shenzhen Metro Line 4 station suddenly moved backwards last night, injuring four people, just days after a similar accident left one dead and 30 hurt in Beijing.
One escalator, produced by French company CNIM, accidentally stopped and then slammed into reverse at the Qinghu Station at round 9:10pm, making four people standing on it fall backwards, the Guangzhou Daily reported.
The four people had received medical treatment and gone back home, the newspaper said. Authorities said that they were still investigating the cause of the accident, it said.
Last Tuesday, an OTIS-branded escalator suddenly changed direction at the Zoo Station on Line 4 subway in Beijing. The fatal accident has prompted a nationwide check on escalator safety.
An initial investigation showed that the Beijing accident was caused by flaws in OTIS's design and manufacture. It also had something to do with the fact that the producer's maintenance was not thorough enough, said Zhang Juming, deputy chief of Beijing's Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau.
