Escaped inmate caught after 6 days

AN escaped inmate from Yubei Prison in Xinxiang City, central China's Henan Province, was caught by police yesterday after a six-day manhunt.

Dong Yunhai, who escaped last Tuesday, was apprehended around noon yesterday in the northern suburb of Henan's Linzhou City, said Hu Xuechang, deputy director of Linzhou police department, adding that Dong was being escorted back to Xinxiang.

Dong, a 23-year-old Henan native, was serving 14 years for theft and had already completed five years. He was convicted of 43 counts of break-in robberies involving more than 300,000 yuan (US$47,200) in 18 months.

Dong fled about 3am last Tuesday, when fog reduced visibility to less than 50 meters, by climbing over the prison wall, a police official said. The prison is reportedly one of the best-guarded prisons in Henan.

On September 11, an inmate escaped from a prison in Shenzhou, Hebei Province. The escapee, Wang Zhengqing, was caught last Monday in his hometown in Henan.
