Escaped inmate lives in temple to avoid arrest
AN inmate who broke from a jail 17 years ago and became a monk to escape arrest was finally caught in a Buddhist temple in northwest Shaanxi Province.
Zhang Xicun, 48, was arrested on October 22. He had spent 10 years in prison for robbery and arson before his escape in 2004, the local Huashang Daily reported today.
Zhang fled to Taibai County in 1995 and became a monk in the Qingfeng Temple. Three years later he went to the Bolin Temple in Fengxian County and served as the abbot with the Buddhist name of Shi Jingwu, the report said.
Through raising funds for the temple's reconstruction, Zhang earned many honors and was given a senior position in the local Buddhist association.
The report said Zhang has been sent back to the Malan Prison in Meixian County.
