Evacuation ordered as blizzard takes toll
MORE than 5,400 people have been evacuated after northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was hit by a strong blizzard that left one person dead.
The Civil Affairs Ministry said on Saturday heavy snow flattened about 800 homes and damaged nearly 5,000 others in Xinjiang's Tacheng and Altay areas in the past week.
The blizzard sent temperatures plunging and resulted in disruptions to electricity supply and transport, Xinhua news agency said, in the latest of a series of cold-related problems in northern China.
The most severe icing in the past 30 years off the coast of east China's Shandong Province continued to worsen yesterday.
The outer edge of ice sheets in the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay and northern Yellow Sea extended 60 nautical miles, 15.5 nautical miles and 20 nautical miles, respectively, according to the State Oceanic Administration.
