Ex chief of Tianjin Binhai New Area gets reprieved death penalty

A HIGHER court has upheld the death sentence with a two-year reprieve of a former official in charge of a key industrial zone in Tianjin Municipality for causing state asset losses worth 220 million yuan (US$3.31 million) and taking millions of yuan in bribes.

The Intermediate People's Court of Shenyang, capital of northeastern Liaoning Province, heard that Pi Qiansheng, 59, abused his position as the director of Tianjin Binhai New Area between 1995 and 2005, the Beijing News reported.

Pi was described as the "king" of the special development area due to his unparalleled power over the area's land and management, said an earlier report by Beijing-based Caijing magazine.

In one instance, Pi took advantage of his post and spent 220 million yuan worth of government budget buying shares of a paper company after he accepted 7.55 million yuan of bribes from its president, Wu Xiaohua, the Beijing News reported.

Pi's wife, who managed a social insurance fund in Tianjin, was said to have embezzled 1 billion yuan from the fund for real estate and stock market investment, the report said.

Pi's daughter, who reportedly worked at the Citibank in the United States, was also arrested for involvement in Pi's corruption.
