Ex-Party chief stands trial over bribery
Shen Weichen, former Party secretary and executive vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology, yesterday stood trial on charges of taking bribes, according to a court statement.
Shen was accused of accepting bribes worth about 95.41 million yuan (US$14.5 million) between 1992 and 2014, according to Changzhou City Intermediate People’s Court in Jiangsu Province.
He allegedly abused his power by using his position and those of other civil servants to help business people over a 22-year period.
Shen served as the Party chief of Taiyuan, capital city of Shanxi Province, and deputy head of the Communist Party of China Central Committee’s publicity department before he assumed his posts at the association.
The court will deliver its verdict at a later date.
The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced its investigation into Shen in April last year.
As China’s largest national organization for science and technology workers, the association maintains close ties with millions of Chinese scientists, engineers and other people employed in those fields, according to its website.
