Ex-bank president on trial for corruption

A former bank president in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region went on trial yesterday on corruption charges involving more than 600 million yuan (US$92 million).

Prosecutors said Yang Chenglin, 64, took bribes and embezzled cash when he was president of the Bank of Inner Mongolia from 1999 to 2013.

He is accused of taking bribes of 307 million yuan for himself, his son Yang Hai, 37, and his mistress Zhang Ting, 42. It is also alleged he conspired with others, including his son, to take 292 million yuan from the bank for his personal use.

Prosecutors also allege Yang swindled 6.28 million yuan from the bank by claiming it used to pay for projects and official spending.

They also allege Yang asked others for a Land Rover, 50 million yuan to decorate his son’s house in the United States, and other sums to buy houses for his mistress in Beijing and Inner Mongolia.

It is also claimed he accepted mobile phone and camera “facilities” worth a total of 630,000 yuan. He is also alleged to have lied that he was on a business trip to the US while he was on holiday with his relatives and paying his expenses, including ivory products worth US$510,000, with official funds. His son is also standing trial on charges involving taking bribes and embezzlement.

His mistress is also charged with accepting bribes.

The trial, at Baotou Intermediate People’s Court in the autonomous region, continues.
