Ex-bankers seek help

ABOUT 300 people took to the street in central Beijing yesterday morning to complain about life difficulties since they were laid off by banks a decade ago.

They gathered and marched in Fuxingmen on Chang'an Avenue at about 9am, witnesses told Xinhua.

Police officers rushed to the scene immediately and a number of buses were sent there as well. Most of the protesters were put on the buses around 10am and taken to a repatriation center in Beijing's eastern suburb, run by the State Bureau for Letters and Calls, police said. There was no clash between protesters and police, according to witnesses.

Police officers at the scene said the protesters were former employees of China's state-owned commercial banks, who received one-off compensations after being laid off about a decade ago when the banks were restructured.

However, the protesters claimed the compensation was not enough and their quality of life had worsened since. Coming from about 16 provinces and regions, they appealed to the government for help.
