Excavator claims 2 lives due to human error

THE bizarre tragedy of two men crushed to death by an excavator at a demolition site in Daqing City, northeastern Heilongjiang Province has been ruled as workplace accident by local officials.

Liu Jifeng, 34, was operating the excavator to tear down an unlicensed pig farm on May 15 when the farm owner Li Baolin, 55, begged him to stop as he would pull down the house himself in two days. Urban management officials agreed and asked Liu to move his vehicle away.

Liu leaned out of the cab window to talk Li who was standing in front of the vehicle when he accidentally touched a button that caused the excavator arm to retract and crushed Li in the waist. Li died instantly.

At the same time, Liu's shirt got hooked on two screws outside the cab, leaving him no time to withdraw into the cab and his head was caught in the gap between the falling arm and the cab and he died as well.

Liu didn't power off or lock the digger when he was talking to Li and his error killed both of them, the local government said in a statement last night.
