Excessive heavy metals detected in reservoir water
THE water of a reservoir in the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was found to contain excessive levels of heavy metals and arsenic, Xinhua reported today.
Environment inspectors found three times the permitted level of cadmium in the reservoir of the Lalang Hydroelectric Dam on the Longjiang River yesterday despite the local efforts to dilute the contaminated river water, Xinhua said.
The test result showed the method of dilution has worked and the level of arsenic has fallen to the safety level, the report said.
Authorities of Yizhou City said the pollution came from a source outside the city and investigation is ongoing to examine chemical plants built along the river, Xinhua said.
Local officials have warned residents not to drink water from the Longjiang River and wells are being dug to ensure the supply of safe drinking water.
