Ex-chief prosecutor given life sentence
A FORMER chief prosecutor in Shenyang, capital of northeast China’s Liaoning Province, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for taking bribes worth nearly 10 million yuan (US$1.61 million).
Zhang Dongyang abused his power as Party chief of Liaozhong County and as Shenyang’s chief prosecutor between 2004 and 2014, the Dandong City Intermediate People’s Court in Liaoning announced yesterday.
Zhang had offered favors that included help with promotion and project contracts, the court said, and was rewarded with cash in return.
The court said Zhang received 80,000 yuan from a publicity chief in Liaozhong surnamed Wang to help Wang become head of the county’s Party discipline watchdog in 2006.
In 2011, Zhang helped his cousin Shi Haiying get relocation compensation of nearly 109 million yuan.
Shi gave him 5.7 million yuan and US$50,000, the court found.
