Execution for official who gambled millions

AN official who embezzled more than 100 million yuan (US$14.65 million) to fund his gambling habit was executed yesterday in Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, nearly five years after the death sentence was first passed.

China's Supreme People's Court finally approved the death sentence on Li Shubiao, 46, today's Guangzhou Daily reported.

Li, while director of Chenzhou Mutual Housing Fund Management Center, cheated 56.67 million yuan from the fund and used 54.95 million yuan for gambling overseas, the Supreme Court said.

Li also transferred another 62 million yuan to fund his own businesses and gambling, the court said.

Li was investigated after Chenzhou's procuratorate received tips in January 2004 that he often went to Macau to gamble. Preliminary investigation found he transferred huge amounts of money to south China's Guangdong Province.

Later that month, he was caught at his home in Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital.

He was first sentenced to death by Chenzhou Intermediate People's Court in August 2005. All his property was confiscated. The verdict was upheld by Hunan Higher People's Court tin January 2009 and execution was approved by China's Supreme People's Court.
