A FARMER in east China's Jiangxi Province has been sentenced to death for killing eight people, including his mother, wife and daughter.

Ji'an City Intermediate People's Court handed down the verdict on Zhou Yezhong who is convicted of murder, the China News Service reported yesterday.

The court said Zhou, 36, a farmer from Ji'an's Jishui County was in a tense relationship with his wife over his long-time gambling.

On May 8, Zhou again had a quarrel with his wife. After his wife left home, he killed his 10-year-old daughter Zhou Xiaomin and then killed his 80-year-old mother despite her kneeling down to beg that he spare her.

He later stormed into a neighbor's home and killed his wife Kang Qiuying, 36, neighbor Hu Dongsheng and Hu's mother Wu Xiu, 83.

Villagers Ye Wen'e and Zhou Nianmei saw the killing spree and tried to call police, but were also killed by Zhou.

Zhou also killed Zuo Huasheng, an immigrant who was working in the county.

Police caught Zhou two hours later.

According to village officials, the Zhous had lived a poor life. In addition to the daughter, Zhou has a 5-year-old son.
