Executives on trial over porn profits
Four executives of an online video service went on trial yesterday charged with profiting from spreading pornographic content.
Qvod, a free peer-to-peer streaming media player was shut down in April 2014 after an investigation revealed that more than 70 percent of the 29,841 video clips stored on its servers were pornographic.
Police arrested Wang Xin, founder and chief executive of Shenzhen Qvod Technology Co Ltd, and three senior managers, Wu Ming, Zhang Kedong and Niu Wenju.
Prosecutors told Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing that the four were aware Qvod was being used to download and watch pornographic content but allowed it in their desire to make a profit. Their inaction caused a vast number of pornographic videos to go viral on the Internet, they said.
All four denied the charges, and their lawyer, Huang Yong, said the company just focused on technical research and development.
“Qvod is just a video player which doesn’t have the nature of spreading information,” Wang told the court..
“No matter what the content is, they can be opened and played. It’s a common phenomenon in the industry,” he said. “We know individual users may use the player to watch porn videos. So we have filtering and a reporting system to curb it.”
The case continues.
