Ex-leader’s sign move ‘means no disrespect’

THE removal of a stone sign written by former Chinese President Jiang Zemin at the entrance of a key Party training center is not a sign of disrespect, a senior official said yesterday.

The Communist Party of China Central Committee’s Party School has adjusted its campus layout and unveiled statues of Communist figures to boost spirits and inspire officials, according to school authorities.

Answering questions from foreign media at a press conference in Beijing yesterday, the school said the decision to move the stone bearing Jiang’s inscription of the school’s name was done for safety reasons and did not indicate any disrespect.

Zhuo Zeyuan, a school official, said the stone was moved from outside the gate to a spot in front of the main office building.

“Many people wanted to take pictures of the Party school, and taking photos with the stone was the best choice, which caused traffic congestion on the main road leading to the north gate of the Summer Palace and posed great danger to people’s safety,” Zhuo said.

Zhuo said the layout adjustment also involved aligning statues of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping along the campus’s axis.

Another statue of Jiao Yulu, a leading example of an honest Party cadre, stands in the east part of campus.

“As the highest institution of learning charged with training senior and middle-ranking CPC cadres, our campus, though it boasts a beautiful environment with trees and ponds, lacked a landscape embodying the Party spirit,” the Party school committee said in a statement

“The figures of the statues represent different phases of development for the CPC, showcasing the Party spirit of catching up with the times, as well as the importance of Party cadres in promoting socialism with Chinese characteristics,” the statement said.

The sculpture of Marx standing by Engels was chosen because Marxism has guided the CPC’s ideology. Marxist theories are usually the first thing Party officials study at the school.

The statue of Mao, founder of the People’s Republic of China, is located in front of the assembly hall.
