The former mayor of Bayannur Prefecture in the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was sentenced to death today with a two-year reprieve for taking about 16 million yuan (US$2.56 million) in bribes.

Li Shigui was charged with taking 15.36 million yuan and US$10,000 in cash and 2,000 grams of gold worth 616,000 yuan in bribes between April 2005 and November 2011, the Baotou City Intermediate People's Court said.

After hearing his sentence, Li appealed to the court ruling, Xinhua News Agency reported.
