Ex-mayor in Inner Mongolia gets suspended death for taking bribes
The former mayor of Bayannur Prefecture in the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was sentenced to death today with a two-year reprieve for taking about 16 million yuan (US$2.56 million) in bribes.
Li Shigui was charged with taking 15.36 million yuan and US$10,000 in cash and 2,000 grams of gold worth 616,000 yuan in bribes between April 2005 and November 2011, the Baotou City Intermediate People's Court said.
After hearing his sentence, Li appealed to the court ruling, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The judges said Li took huge bribes from real estate developers and did them favor in return. He was taken into police custody on May 8 and prosecuted on September 25.
