Ex-media official taken for questioning
THE secretary-general of the China Newspaper Association and former head of Henan Province bureau of People’s Daily was taken away for investigation on Tuesday, the Beijing News reported last night.
Rumors have been circulating since last year about the possibility of Luo Huiwen being investigated, though he had never disappeared from the public eye, a source was quoted as saying.
Whether or not Luo, 52, is the subject of a probe is unknown, though it could be that he has been linked to economic crimes, the source said.
Luo’s wife and child have been living overseas for several years, and the official was stopped by the entry-exit authority earlier this year as he attempted to leave the country to visit them in Canada.
The investigation might be linked to the fact that Luo provided positive testimony for former People’s Daily colleague Guo Fang, who on July 4 was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison for embezzlement and taking bribes.
The Zhengzhou Intermediate People’s Court also seized 120,000 yuan (US$19,500) worth of her assets.
Guo was the legal representative and general manager of the Henan branch of the state-owned People’s Daily Digital Communication Co from September 2011 to May 2013, at the same time Luo was head of People’s Daily’s Henan branch.
Guo was detained by police in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan, last year.
During her first trial, the court said Guo had failed to reimburse the 300,000 yuan her company had paid for her to follow an MBA course. She returned the money only after being detained.
Luo gave positive testimony, saying he had recommended the course to Guo to facilitate her professional improvement.
He also told the court that the company would foot the bill for Guo.
