Ex-miner digs his family's new digs
A MAN in central China has figured out his own way to survive under the country's rocketing housing prices - just dig with a shovel.
The 64-year-old Chen Xinnian, who used to be a mine worker, started putting his expertise to use again four years ago to realize a dream of his own - creating a large and comfortable apartment under earth for his family to live.
He has finished digging a 50-square-meter basement, six meters deep, in his yard in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, local Dahe Newspaper reported yesterday.
After moving their furniture and home appliances in, the family spent their summer at the new home with satisfaction.
Chen said he came up with the idea after his daughter told him she had a boyfriend, which brought worry that their original house was too small and shabby for a family of four, and could hamper the daughter's marriage, said Chen. Buying a new apartment was also unrealistic.
