A FORMER high-ranking official of the Ministry of Public Security was sentenced to 12 years in prison for taking nearly 2 million yuan (US$295,000) in bribes, including 1 million yuan from disgraced GOME tycoon Huang Guangyu.
Xiang Huaizhu, 46, deputy head of economic crime investigation at the Ministry of Public Security, was found guilty of abusing his position to cover business fraud at several companies, including Huang's GOME Electrical Appliances Co, Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.
His personal property of 1 million yuan was confiscated.
His wife Li Shanjuan was sentenced to one year and seven months for helping him take bribes of 170,000 yuan. Li worked at the auditing department of the Beijing bureau.
Xiang sheltered Huang in a mortgage default scandal and a tax evasion scheme in 2006. In return, Huang asked his assistant Xu Zhongmin to give Xiang nearly 1 million yuan to buy shares of a company owned by Huang before the price climbed in July, 2007.
Huang also gave Xiang a set of home appliances valuing around 60,000 yuan.
Huang, once the richest man on the mainland, was sentenced in May to 14 years for bribery, illegal trading and insider trading.
