Ex-official gets death in bribery case
ZHENG Shaodong, disgraced former assistant to China's minister of public security, was given a suspended death sentence yesterday for taking more than 8 million yuan (US$1.2 million) in bribes and abusing his position.
Zheng was chief of the ministry's economic crimes investigation unit until he was disciplined in January 2009.
The Xi'an Intermediate People's Court sentenced Zheng to death but with two-year reprieve because of his cooperation in investigation.
According to a statement by the court, Zheng abused his various positions and accepted bribes worth more than 8.3 million yuan from 2001 to October 2007.
Zheng's illicitly gained assets have been confiscated.
