Ex-official gets life in prison for graft

Former vice secretary-general in the government of north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday for bribery and embezzlement.

Wu Zhizhong held back state funds of up to 10.26 million yuan (US$1.69 million). He and his relatives took 5.45 million yuan in bribes, and he and his wife Yu Huilong siphoned off national assets worth 34.2 million yuan, the Intermediate People’s Court of Hohhot said in its verdict.

Also, the amount seized from him could not have come from his income as a government worker, the court said. He was found to have 20.97 million yuan, HK$19,757.39, US$134,352.17, 3,474.49 euros and 865 Canadian dollars in cash, China News Service reported.

Meanwhile, Yang Lin, a former top political adviser in Jiuquan City in northwestern Gansu Province, is being investigated for bribery and debauchery, the local discipline watchdog announced.

Yang, former chairman of the Jiuquan Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has been expelled from the Party and his ill-gotten wealth has been confiscated. No other details were revealed.
