Ex-official is executed

A FORMER Party discipline chief in Chenzhou, Hunan Province, was executed yesterday for taking bribes topping 31.5 million yuan (US$4.77 million) and possessing a huge amount of unaccountable property.

The former Chenzhou Deputy Party Secretary and Secretary of Discipline Inspection Commission Zeng Jinchun was executed for accepting bribes and holding a huge amount of property with unidentified sources, Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported yesterday.

The court's verdict said Zeng had accepted bribes of 31.51 million yuan between 1997 and 2006 and owned unaccountable property worth more than 9.52 million yuan.

An earlier report by China Youth Daily said Zeng was in charge of approving local coal mines, providing opportunities to take bribes. When Zeng was arrested in 2006, Chenzhou residents even lit fireworks to celebrate.

In a separate case, former Vice Mayor Chen Guangli of Yibin City, Sichuan Province, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on Tuesday for accepting bribes, Chinanews reported. His brother Chen Guangming was sentenced to six years for money laundering.
