Ex-official jailed for graft

A former senior Communist Party official and an ally of the country’s disgraced security chief Zhou Yongkang was sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption yesterday.

Li Chongxi, who headed a political advisory body in the southwestern province of Sichuan, one of Zhou’s powerbases, was convicted of taking bribes of about 11 million yuan (US$1.7 million).

Li, 64, was indicted in April and tried in a court in Nanchang in the eastern province of Jiangxi.

Li “admitted to his crimes and expressed regret” after appearing in court, Xinhua news agency reported, adding that his cooperation had led to lighter punishment.

Xinhua said Li, from whom authorities confiscated assets worth 1 million yuan, used his positions in Sichuan, including those at real estate and construction firms, to secure rights for local companies to develop state-owned land. Either directly or through his wife, Li accepted money and goods valued at about 11.1 million yuan, it added.

He is among a slew of former Zhou allies to face punishment for graft.

Li’s official biography says he was promoted, during Zhou’s tenure in Sichuan, to be a deputy provincial Party chief and head of the province’s anti-graft watchdog.

Zhou has been charged with leaking state secrets, as well as bribery and abuse of power.

A member of the Party’s Politburo Standing Committee, Zhou held the position of domestic security chief until he retired in 2012.

He was sentenced to life in prison in June.

Also yesterday, Zhang Suzhou, former President and Party Chief of the Anhui Broadcasting Corporation, stood trial for suspected graft.

A court in Anhui Province heard that Zhang, born in 1953, allegedly used his power to misappropriate more than 3.4 million yuan, Xinhua reported.

He also took bribes from advertising companies, TV producers and singers when serving as president of the broadcasting corporation and head of the Anhui administrative bureau of radio, film and television between April 2006 and July 2014. He was suspected of receiving cash sums of 11.4 million yuan, US$47,000 and 2,000 euros (US$2,193), gift cards worth 179,000 yuan, plus gold bars, jadeware and a watch with a combined value of 1.07 million yuan.
