Ex-official sentenced to life in jail for graft
A FORMER urban development official and ex-president of a construction company - listed in the top 500 enterprises on the Chinese mainland - has been sentenced to life imprisonment for taking bribes of nearly 12 million yuan (US$1.8 million) and 掳?embezzling more than 140,000 yuan.
Tan Li, 57, deputy director of the urban construction and development department in Changchun, captial of northeast China's Jilin Province, and also the former chairman of the Changchun Construction Engineering Group, was sentenced by the Baicheng Intermediate People's Court, the China News Service reported yesterday.
During his tenure from 1997 to 2008, Tan accepted nine houses and cash from contractors, real estate developers and decorating firms. All of the bribes have since been confiscated.
In return, Tan abused his position by helping the 掳?companies win contracts and get approval for the purchase of land.
Tan was also accused of illegally allocating one apartment under the company's name to a company employee, Wang Xiaofeng, during his term. Wang later returned the apartment to Tan, who employed his brother to sell it for about 140,000 yuan - Tan kept the money for himself.
The court showed leniency because Tan had voluntarily deposited nearly 860,000 yuan into the government's "honest account," a special account reserved for corrupt officials to return illegal earnings.
Tang also made a full confession after he was arrested earlier this month.
