Ex-official stands trial
A FORMER vice mayor of Hangzhou City stood trial this week on charges of accepting bribes, embezzlement and misuse of power.
No verdict was reached in the case against Xu Maiyong, 52, former vice mayor of Hangzhou, which was heard by the Intermediate People's Court of Ningbo City in Zhejiang Province to ensure an impartial hearing.
The People's Procuratorate of Ningbo City accused Xu of accepting bribes worth more than 160 million yuan (US$24.4 million) between 1995 and 2004 when he served in three government posts - vice mayor in Xiaoshan City, which is now a district of Hangzhou, head of Xihu District in Hangzhou and vice mayor of Hangzhou.
In return, Xu, who was sacked in April 2009, helped the companies obtain land-use rights, preferential taxation policies and project contracts, prosecutors said.
