Expelled student goes back to school
A 16-YEAR-OLD boy detained for spreading online rumors who was asked to leave his school in northwest Gansu Province was back in class yesterday after the local education department intervened.
An initial investigation found that Yang Hui had been told to leave because he hadn’t completed the necessary procedures to enable his transfer to Yusheng Middle School in Tianshui City.
Department officials said yesterday he could continue his education while the transfer was processed.
“Thanks again to the media and netizens around the world. Thanks to your attention and support, I can go back to school,” Yang wrote on his microblog.
A local newspaper reported that a deputy headmaster at Yusheng had allowed Yang to go to the school after learning his father was moving to the district. But he failed to inform the headmaster or obtain the documents Yang would need and Yang was asked to leave.
The rules state that children can only go to schools where their household is registered. They can transfer if the household registration changes or parents’ place of work changes. Both schools and authorities also have to agree to the move.
Yang and his father suspected the decision might have been linked to the son’s online accusations that police had beaten him when questioning him about earlier claims police had acted improperly when a man jumped to his death from a KTV club.
Police said one of Yang’s posts had been retweeted over 500 times, violating a recently introduced regulation about online rumors.
