Expert decries use of additives in rice
A Chinese food expert warned that the new amendment of a national standard that allows the use of three additives in rice might put food safety at risk, the Beijing News reported today.
The expert who demanded anonymity said it is unnecessary to list a thickening agent known as sodium starch phosphate and two preservatives, sodium diacetate and chitosan, as legal additives for rice in the revised National Standard for Food Additives issued on May 13.
"Rice is a staple food in China as well as a major material for other food products. We must treat the use of rice additives with great caution," the newspaper quoted the expert as saying.
