Experts and academics lock horns over Cao Cao's tomb

SEVERAL members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have denounced doubts swirling about the authenticity of the recently unearthed tomb of third-century warlord Cao Cao, saying they were "not scientific at all."

They made the statement after 23 experts across the country accused Anyang County in Henan Province of faking evidences to tie an ancient tomb to the legendary warlord to gain attention and cash in on tourism.

The 23 experts voiced their doubts on a forum convened to challenge the Cao Cao tomb. They listed evidences against the tomb such "some words carved on stone tablets unearthed in the grave were wrong or of a later style."

Zhao Chao, a researcher with the academy's Institute of Archaeology and an expert on stone scriptures, said there were too many kinds of calligraphy back in the third century and many were lost with time.

"They can not jump at the conclusion that the words were wrong only because they have never seen them before," Zhao said. "It's not scientific at all."
