Experts call for Bohai Sea protection
CHINESE maritime experts yesterday called for better environmental protection for north China's Bohai Sea, after oil spills earlier this year.
Speaking at a symposium on maritime environmental accidents and ecological safety, Xiao Hanqiang, a former official with China's Ministry of Land and Resources, called for a committee to regulate resources exploitation and environmental protection.
Xiao said the Bohai Sea has the most fragile ecology of China's coastal waters.
Since June, more than 5,500 square kilometers of the 78,000-square-kilometer Bohai Sea has been polluted by an oil spill, the country's worst offshore maritime pollution. It is now under control. The platform involved belongs to ConocoPhillips China, a subsidiary of the US energy giant.
Experts also called for an emergency response mechanism aimed at tackling environmental accidents.
