Explosion that killed four in Yunnan caused by villager, 26
A 26-year-old man has been identified as the bomber who caused a deadly blast in a government office in Yunnan Province on Thursday, killing four and injuring 16, the local government announced yesterday.
The man, Zhao Dengyong, detonated explosives at the government office at Baihetan Town of Qiaojia County in the City of Zhaotong about 9am on Thursday, the county government said.
The blast killed the bomber himself, two other villagers and a government official at the scene, officials said.
"Surveillance camera tapes and witnesses showed the blast was caused by Zhao," said an announcement by Qiaojia County government on its website.
Zhao's motive is still under investigation, and police said yesterday that the blast was not related to the demolition work in his hometown in Baogunao Town, some 100 kilometers away from Baihetan.
The other three victims killed were a female villager, Ran Yi, 30, a male villager named Tang Tianrong, 25, and county housing demolition official Hu Zongyu, 39, government officials said.
It was reported that officials at the site were signing compensation agreements with local villagers over the demolition of their homes when the incident happened.
Qiaojia County government spokesman Lu Weihua yesterday denied previous media reports saying the blast was caused by a female suicide bomber who wrapped the explosives around a baby in her arms.
Lu said the report was incorrect but said he could not reveal more details of the case.
According to Yunnan-based Chuncheng Evening News, villagers living in the Baihetan Town complained that they were not satisfied with a relocation plan in which the government planned to purchase land from them at a low price and sell it to real estate developers for much higher prices.
The blast followed a controversial demolition operation also in Qiaojia County on April 17 when government officials were accused of beating a villager and dragging him to a government office as they were demolishing his house, described as having been built illegally.
The man, surnamed Ding, was reported to have died.
