Explosions kill 1, injure 8 near Party HQ of Shanxi
A SERIES of blasts that left one person dead and eight others injured near the Party headquarters of north China’s Shanxi Province yesterday were caused by homemade bombs, local police said.
All the eight injured were being treated at local hospitals. One of them was said to be in serious condition.
The blasts struck around 7:40am in front of the office complex of the Shanxi committee of the Party on Yingze Street in the provincial capital of Taiyuan, according to the city’s public security bureau.
There were eight explosions. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was dispatched to the scene of the blasts. No other explosives were discovered.
Steel beads and circuit boards that were found scattered at the blast sites implied that they were homemade bombs, police said after an initial investigation.
China National Radio reporters said they saw at least four spots where the blasts went off, and all of them were in the greenbelts in front of the building. Broken pieces of glass and metal balls were also found around the blast sites.
CNR said eight vehicles were damaged by the blasts.
A witness told Xinhua news agency that he heard a big sound while driving a car along Yingze Bridge and saw dense smoke and sparks 20 seconds later.
When he arrived in front of the office building and waited at the traffic light shortly afterward, he heard another blast.
He noticed a minivan in smoke and glass pieces flying.
Pictures from the area showed the broad street in front of the headquarters closed to traffic, and fire trucks, ambulances and police vehicles parked in the area. One picture showed a man lying on the ground.
Police rushed to the site immediately. Traffic resumed after a few hours. The cause of the blasts was still being investigated as of late yesterday.
Security forces are also on the edge after a terrorist attack in Beijing last week when three people drove through crowds to Tian’anmen Gate before setting their vehicle alight. The attack killed five people, including three inside the vehicle. The attack was supported by the terrorist organization East Turkistan Islamic Movement, police said.
