Ex-police chief held over death of woman

A FORMER police chief in north China鈥檚 Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has been detained in connection with the death of a 28-year-old woman.

News website caixin.com quoted police as saying they received a call on Friday from the woman, surnamed Li, saying she was being 鈥渉ounded鈥 by Zhao Liping, 64.

Zhao was taken into custody after police studied videos of the route taken by his car.

A police officer told the website that Zhao is believed to have shot and injured Li before she escaped in a taxi, from where she called police.

However, it is alleged that Zhao later caught up with the woman, killed her and put her body in the trunk of his car.

Her partly burned body was found buried on a hill about 10 kilometers from where it is alleged she was fatally shot.

The results of an autopsy are awaited but the officer said Li had been shot in the head.

Police found two guns on the other side of the hill and Li鈥檚 belongings and a blood-stained car seat were nearby.

An investigation found that Zhao and Li had spent a night together in a hotel about five minutes鈥 drive from where she is alleged to have been murdered.

Zhao joined the police in 1972 and was appointed police chief in 2005. He was elected deputy chairman of the CPPCC Inner Mongolia Regional Committee in 2012.
