Ex-police officer arrested over 31m yuan bribes

A FORMER police officer in the southwestern province of Sichuan found with 11 million yuan (US$1.795 million) in cash at his home and office has been arrested over bribes.
Police officials say this haul — in new 100-yuan bills with consecutive serial numbers — represents barely a third of bribes taken by Li Rongbiao.
Officials said, Li, a former vice captain of the provincial public security team, has admitted to amassing 31 million yuan through corruption.
This week, the provincial publicity department said prosecutors have arrested Li on charges of bribery. No other details were given.
Provincial police chief Shi Jun said in a meeting in December, though only disclosed recently, that Li abused his power to take huge bribes.
“Li committed crimes in fields he supervised and the sums involved were enormous,” a department-level official told The Beijing News.
Li is said to have issued approval to private-run companies buying, transporting and selling explosives — procedures under strict controls.
He abused this authority, taking bribes to help firms get certificates, an official said.
One company manager said he had to send money to supervisors every year.
“Sums ranged from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yuan. Police were also involved,” he said.
In addition, said the newspaper, Li abused his position as vice chairman of the 128-member Sichuan Association of Blasting Engineering to siphon off membership fees.
Li also allegedly ran classes offering advice on how to obtain certificates for explosives-related work. These attracted 2,000 people, with each paying 1,000 yuan.
