Ex-police officer cleared of corruption
A FORMER police chief in Shanxi Province has finally cleared his name in court - five years after he finished serving his two-year sentence for corruption.
When receiving the long-awaited acquittal, Li Qingming, the former director of the public security bureau in Hongtong County, Linfen City, burst into tears, reported the Beijing-based Law Weekend yesterday.
But Li, 44, said he is still fighting to regain his government position and Party membership, which had been stripped after he was charged with embezzling 21,800 yuan (US$3262) and taking bribes of 41,300 yuan in 2003.
Li said he was taken away for interrogation in 2002, three days after he had announced his candidature for deputy director of the city's police department.
A team of more than 10 掳?policemen searched his home for several hours, but could not find anything that was related to Li's alleged corruption.
Despite the lack of evidence, a court in Fushan County ruled that Li was guilty of embezzling money and of taking bribes to help fund the construction of his elder sister's house. Li launched an appeal, which was rejected.
Li was released from prison in 2005 and asked authorities to review the case. The Linfen City Intermediate People's Court ruled in March he was not guilty due to lack of evidence.
Li said he asked the authorities to reinstate him to his former position one year ago, but had received no response.
