Ex-soldier stabbed to death by pickpockets

A former armed police soldier was stabbed to death by a pickpocket in revenge on the New Year's Day in the eastern Jiangxi Province, police said yesterday.

Li Chao, 21, was going to a wedding by bus in Fengcheng City when he saw a pickpocket try to steal the wallet of an old man. The demobilized soldier shouted: "How dare you steal a senior's money!"

The thief stopped after his act was made known to everyone on the bus. He and his partners followed Li out of the bus and began to attack him in revenge, the PLA Daily reported.

Two suspects stabbed Li repeatedly and fled. Li covered his chest with one hand and dialed for police with the other. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his wounds two hours later.

The two suspects, Cai Zhanglin and Chen Lianghua, were caught on the afternoon of January 2 and were detained for investigation.

The city officials visited Li's family on January 3 to express condolence and said the killers will be punished severely according to the law.

Li served in the armed police forces from 2008 to 2010. His fellow soldiers recalled him as a man ready to help others. Li was awarded the title of outstanding soldier when he was in service.
