Extortion over hair in food earns man 10 months in jail

A MAN got 10 months in jail and a fine for blackmailing an eatery owner to the tune of 5,500 yuan (US$901) after finding a hair in his food, Qianjiang Evening News reported today.

The 35-year-old man, surnamed Zhao, was detained and fined 4,000 yuan, a local court ruled yesterday.

In 2012, Zhao demanded compensation of 8,000 yuan after saying he found one hair in a dish at a small eatery where he dined with three friends in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, the report said.

The owner apologized and offered to cancel the bill for the meal, which amounted to 200 yuan.

But Zhao threatened to break the eatery apart if his demand wasn’t met, the report said.

Afraid of having the restaurant damaged, the owner paid 5,500 yuan after negotiating and borrowing 4,000 yuan.

The eatery owner called police after Zhao and his friends left.
