Extortion suspects captured in Fujian
EIGHT suspects were caught in southeast China's Fujian Province for blackmailing Austria-based Chinese whose relatives live in the province, Fujian's Department of Public Security said yesterday.
On March 11, the department received a report from the Chinese cultural exchange association in Austria, a non-government organization, saying several telephone callers had attempted to blackmail Fujian natives now living in Austria.
The callers threatened to harm their relatives in Fujian if money was not paid.
Fujian police caught eight suspects in the Fujian cities of Zhangzhou and Xiamen.
One of the suspects confessed the group had obtained the identities of the overseas Chinese from the Internet and had made more than 410 calls in early March to Chinese in 17 countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, France, and Austria.
