UK teacher jailed for child sex offenses
A BRITISH teacher who worked at a Beijing international school has been jailed for 12 years in the UK for sexual offenses and making indecent images of children.
Neil Robinson, 47, handed himself in to Chinese authorities on April 26 last year following a renewed police appeal in the UK for information as to his whereabouts, according to the BBC. Beijing police said they then detained Robinson on suspicion of being in the country illegally.
On May 24, he was extradited from China and arrested by Surrey Police at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Robinson’s profile on the job-hunting site NetworkESL.com, last updated in 2010, showed he had eight years’ experience in China.
There were no reports that he had committed sex-related crimes during his time in China.
Robinson, formerly of Staines in Surrey, admitted three counts of unlawful sex with a girl under 13, one count of making an indecent video of a child and three counts of indecent assault at a previous hearing at Guildford Crown Court in September 2013. The offences took place between 1999 and 2002, police said.
He was later charged with 25 offenses in relation to making and possessing indecent images of children. He admitted these charges at a hearing this month.
Robinson must sign the sex offenders register indefinitely and was given a sex offense prevention order for life. He was also disqualified from working with children.
After Robinson had been sentenced, Detective Inspector Becky Molyneux told BBC: “Robinson is a highly dangerous sexual predator who put his vulnerable young victims through what must have been horrendous ordeals and then spent the next 10 years doing everything he could to escape punishment for those horrific crimes.
“I hope the outcome from court today demonstrates that no matter where in the world offenders try to hide and escape from their past we will use all available resources to bring them to justice.”
Surrey Police said Robinson had been wanted for more than a decade after fleeing the UK in 2002. Officers believed he was living abroad and in September 2012 issued a renewed appeal for information as to his whereabouts on the BBC’s “Crimewatch” program.
Several students at the Beijing World Youth Academy told a Beijing website they recognized Robinson as one of their former teachers after they saw the program in March 2013.
The revelations shocked many of his former students who described Robinson as a jovial person who was generally well-liked, according to the Beijing Kids website.
A school spokesman said “there were no formal or informal complaints made against him” in his three years at the school before he left for “personal reasons” in May 2012.
Last June, an American teacher at a French school in Shanghai was detained over reports that he sexually assaulted children. The 32-year-old, identified only by his surname, McMahon, had been teaching English for five years at the Lycee Francais de Shanghai, police said.
It is alleged that he molested six students aged 6 to 10.
