Ex-traffic chief jailed for bribery

A FORMER Beijing traffic chief and his son were jailed for handing out highly sought-after car plates in return for huge bribes, taking the number of people implicated and jailed in the scandal to at least 12, media reports said.

Song Jianguo, 61, a former director of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, was sentenced to life imprisonment on bribery charges yesterday by the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court.

Earlier, the court sentenced his son Song Zhe, 33, a criminal investigation squad leader with the Beijing Public Security Bureau, to 20 years in jail for embezzlement and bribery, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

Song Jianguo’s indictment said that he had accepted 23.9 million yuan (US$3.8 million) in bribes and issued the coveted “Jing-A” car plates to vehicle owners like property developer Guo Wengui.

Besides the duo, at least 10 other people involved in the scandal have been jailed, with terms ranging from one year to 14 years, reports said.
