Extremely cold winter may occur this year

CHINA has been experiencing extreme weather conditions this year while experts warned that the temperature could be extremely low this winter.

The immediate factors are the abnormal changes in general air circulation and global warming, which caused extreme weather to occur with greater frequency and intensity, said Jiao Meiyan, the deputy chief of China Meteorological Administration today.

Many Chinese cities were hit by heavy rainfalls and heat waves in the past eight months. The massive mudslide in Gausu Province this month, for example, was triggered by excessive rainfalls after a strong cold front moved southward, Jiao said.

The record-long drought in southwest China's Yunan and Guizhou provinces which damaged millions of hectares of crops was attributed to a strong, prolonged subtropical high pressure, the senior meteorologist said.

Global warming caused by greenhouse gases emitted by human activity was the other major contributing factor, which pushed the temperatures to record highs in many countries, Jiao added.
