Ex-vice finance minister stands trial over bribes

THE former head of the budget committee of China's top legislature stood trial today for taking 7.44 million yuan in bribes during his tenure as the vice finance minister.

Zhu Zhigang was charged with bribery in Xinyang City Intermediate People's Court in central China's Henan Province. The indictment also said Zhu took advantage of his post in the Ministry of Finance to help his families gain good jobs and bank loans for business activities.

Zhu mainly gained the money through buying cheap house developers specially offered to him and selling them at market prices afterwards, according to Caijing Magazine.

Zhu offered the developers preferential treatment, but the prosecutors did not name the developers involved.

Not much detail on the case was revealed, and the court would rule in another day, Xinhua news agency reported.

The 60-year-old Zhu was vice finance minister from 2001 to 2008.

He was promoted to the head of Budgetary Office in the National People's Congress in February 2008, only to be kicked out of the Communist Party of China four months later, according to the Party disciplinary watchdog. His illicit gains were confiscated.

He was voted out of the National People's Congress in December 2008 and has been under investigation since.
