Ex-vice governor of Jilin admits 19m yuan bribes
A FORMER vice governor of northeastern Jilin Province yesterday pleaded guilty to taking bribes of 19.19 million yuan (US$3.14 million).
Tian Xueren, 66, former executive deputy governor of Jilin and Party chief, admitted taking 85 bribes between 1995 and 2011, at the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court.
Tian’s lawyer argued that his client should receive a lighter sentence as he pled guilty.
Prosecutors charged Tian, who was also chairman of the Bank of Jilin, with abuse of power.
They said he used his position to help 10 people with businesses, career promotions and school places.
Wth Tian’s help, five people gained promotions, including the provincial deputy police chief and the city’s chief prosecutor, Beijing News reported.
Tian received bribes, ranging from 5,000 yuan to 1 million yuan, at his home or office in provincial capital Changchun, the newspaper reported.
One case involved Guo Chunsheng, the former CEO of Jilin Zixin Pharmaceutical Industrial Co Ltd and deputy to the provincial People’s Congress, prosecutors said.
Tian promised to show favoritism toward Guo’s company, and in return between 2005 to 2010 Guo gave Tian US dollars worth 12.17 million yuan.
Chang Zheng, a former CEO of Tianhe, another local drug company, also bribed Tian.
As Tian confessed and the money was recovered, prosecutors recommended a lighter sentence for him.
The court didn’t return a verdict.
Tian was investigated by China’s top disciplinary watchdog in November 2011.
There were reports that Tian’s wrongdoings emerged after tens of millions of yuan were stolen from his house in a break-in.
He was appointed executive vice provincial governor of Jilin in 2004.
